P.M. on Hurricane Lisa Recovery: “We Want to Build as Many Homes as We Possibly Can”

Prime Minister John Briceño

Many residents in the Belize District are without a roof over their heads, following Hurricane Lisa. The Government of Belize is intent on rebuilding a number of these homes. In the interim, several families are being provided with temporary shelter. Prime Minister Briceño discussed this topic further on Open Your Eyes.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“When it comes to housing we are trying as best as we possibly can. While someone can find and say see that ply wood house, it was never built. It would be impossible to build every single house the way we want because we have limited funding. But, we want to build as many homes as we possibly can, for those that were destroyed. If you look at what took place, all of these badly built homes, we have to start to build with, the Ministry of Housing what they are doing is starting to come up with how exactly you need to build a house, because if you build it properly it can withstand a hurricane. The houses that the Ministry of Housing is doing right now, they are low cost housing but they are well built, not a single one of them got damaged. So, that is the first stage. So, Minister Espat and his team and Victor Espat they have been on the ground all this time ensuring that we could get a right assessment and plans. The idea is to build as many homes as we possibly can. We want to see if we can make some funding available probably through the DFC or the National Bank for those that have jobs, say the middle class, nurses, doctors, teachers and so forth, those that have an income, they can access cheap funding to be able to build and build properly. We have to set standards, or else after every hurricane we are going t o have this same thing.”
