No Decision Yet on Compensation for Poultry Farmers

Jose Mai

And today, we asked the Minister of Agriculture if there are any plans to compensate those poultry farmers who lost money as a result of the depopulation exercise. He told us that there must first be a discussion between all stakeholders to determine the next step forward. Here is what he had to say.

Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture

“We have to base ourselves on lab results and science. When we sent that lab, we sent the samples for testing they came back positive. Two tests came back positive. After that we did like ninety more test and eight came back positive, this is for anti-bodies. So that later on it went to another lab and the lab said it was negative and it never existed. We have to base ourselves on what the first lab tells us. We cannot wait for another month or two months for depopulation when we know that this disease could be transmitted to humans. So, this topic I believe should have been discussed within before being aired out like that.”

“What becomes now of those of those losses to those poultry farmers? Do they have to sit back and accept those losses? Is the Ministry stepping in to do anything?”
Jose Mai

“When diseases hit, many people lose. It is unfair to say to government you need to compensate me for poultry depopulated when we all know that there was a risk element there. I don’t know that that is what we will do. But this topic has to be discussed using scientific based approach. We acted in good faith. We acted in a way to save the industry. We didn’t wake up one day and say we will depopulate. It has to be based on science and scientific evidence.”
