In Cruise Tourism, Business Must Go On

Nicole Usher-Solano

In Belize City, the Fort Street Tourism Village was also adversely affected by the hurricane.  The devastation at F.S.T.V. forced a rethink of cruise ship arrivals that were scheduled for this week.  After careful consideration, it was decided that cruise ships would continue to call on Belize, despite the state of the city.

“On Friday, we actually went into the village.  When we got in there, we saw vendors mopping and sweeping and trying to get water out.  They had a significant amount of water damage, in addition to the damage to infrastructure.  So we had a lot of discussion as to whether or not we would have been able to handle cruise this week.  There was the consideration of perhaps we should have canceled the calls for this week.  As you know, that represents quite a bit of jobs and that was the last thing that we wanted to do.  So we tried to pool all of our resources together and ensure that we could be ready for Wednesday.  There were cancellations between last week and also yesterday, amounting to approximately twenty thousand or so passengers that didn’t come in and that represents about a million and a half in lost revenue from cruise alone.  But we’re back on track today.  You’ll see the two ships in harbor, tours are on track, I’ve checked in and we’ve had over eighty percent disembarkation so far today and the reports that I’ve gotten so far is that everybody is satisfied, they’re on tour.  The village has quite a bit of entertainment in place to try to make sure that the guests are happy and not shocked by a city that has been phased by a hurricane.”
