Several Belizeans Receive Titles and Awards

The last set of titles and awards that were approved by the late Queen Elizabeth the Second were today bestowed upon several Belizeans by Governor-General, Froyla Tzalam in Belmopan. The awards were presented in the late Queen’s name in three categories. Receiving the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) award was Sean Feinstein, for service in Entrepreneurship and to the Community. An Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) award was bestowed upon Madam Justice Michelle Arana, for service to the field of Law and Public Service; and Gordon Christopher Roe, for service to Entrepreneurship and the Community.  Appointments for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) were given to Senator Elena Smith, for service to Education and Trade Unionism; Florencia Castillo, for service to the Community; Doctor Marcelo Coyi, for service to the Medical Profession and the Community; and Joel Robinson, for service to the Community. Before conferring the awards, Governor-General Froyla Tzalam explained the three different categories of awards.

“The monarch has the sole right of conferring titles of honour and deserving people, based on the recommendations of the Belize Cabinet. Of special significance for today’s ceremony is that these awards are the last set that was approved by our late Queen Elizabeth and as such, will be presented in her name. (That’s how long it takes for things to move from London to Belize.) The three categories are the Order of the British Empire to be bestowed today are: Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, CBE. The CBE is awarded to individuals for having had a prominent role at the national level or a leading role at the regional level. CBEs are also awarded for distinguished and innovative contribution to any area. Officer of the Order of the British Empire, OBE: the OBE is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions at a local level, or whose work has gained a national profile. Member of the Order of the British Empire, MBE: the MBE is, awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community, which has had a long-term significant impact.”
