Briceño Administration in Full Recovery Mode Post Hurricane Lisa

Since the all-clear was given on Thursday, Prime Minister Briceño has been busy, working closely with all relevant government agencies to restore a sense of normalcy in Belize City.  Monies have been made available through the Constituency Development Fund for area representatives to assist their constituents have suffered losses as a result of the hurricane.  The utilities, according to the head of government, have, for the most part, been brought back online.

“Pretty much what we have been doing for the past few days, we’ve been more on a relief mode, that we are going out there looking at the people in the different areas, divisions, and finding out what they need.  And whilst we are very much appreciative of what NEMO has been doing along with the B.D.F. and the police, we quickly sent out monies through the Constituency Development Fund so that the representatives, the elected representatives can immediately go in and start to give out assistance.  We have given it to all the representatives.  Of course, the divisions that got hurt most got more than others, even within the city itself.  So we’re working on the relief, we’ve been issuing a few thousand relief bags and we are trying to get mattresses to them.  In some instances, trying to get small repairs so at least people can move back into their homes.  As you all know, BEL has done an exceptionally good job and they are pretty much past ninety-five percent on and so is water and BTL and Speednet.  All of these utilities have quickly gone back online, trying to get life back to normal. It breaks my heart to see what has happened to some of these people, their small homes being knocked down or washed away and the amount of debris that’s around that we have to be cleaning up.”
