PM Briceño Carries Out Fly Over of Affects Areas
Prime Minister John Briceño, and the Minister of Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet, conducted a flyover of the Belize District on Thursday. According to Prime Minister Briceño, the flyover confirmed their assumptions, the damage is wide spread. He took the opportunity during a press conference on Thursday evening to highlight his continued call to action on international platforms, as the effects of climate change continue to severely affect economies of developing nations like Belize.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“We tool a fly over in Belize City. We saw a lot of roofs that were damaged. We still saw some water in Belama Phase 4 and 5. We went into Ladyville also got substantial damage, Hattieville, and then after that it is mostly agriculture. We flew all the way over by Santander. We have several hundreds of acres of cane land that have been leveled by the hurricane. We are thankful that most of the water has ran out from Belize City, despite the tremendous amounts of flooding that we had. Pretty much the entire city was under water for a number of hours. Many of these developed countries they don’t feel what we go through. For example, a hurricane hits Florida it is less than one percent of G.D.P. One hurricane hits a small country like Belize we have a substantial amount of damage and to cost a lot for us to rebuild back. That is why we have been calling out to the international community to do their part. We have been doing our part with the planet to protect the environment to try to hold down the increase in temperatures. But, they are not doing their part. They are doing damage to their environment to grow their economies and now it is time for them to pay us back for the work we are doing.”
