Red Cross Activates Response Efforts in Belize District

The Belize Red Cross has commenced its operations in Belize City. Yesterday, Red Cross volunteers were out in the Jane Usher Boulevard area providing tarps to homeowners whose roofs were damaged by Hurricane Lisa. They also provided residents with medical supplies. Today, those volunteers were out again, this time in the Gungulung Area, assessing damages and providing much needed relief to affected families. We spoke with Monica Heredia, the Youth and Development Manager at the Belize Red Cross.

“We went into action before the storm even hit. Before the storm hit we were checking with the branches to see what their containers are like. If you see behind me we have pre positioned contained filled with tarps, and hygiene kits, and so before the storm even hit we were loading up our trucks and containers so that we have pre positioned stocks ready to hit the ground when the storm leaves. As soon as the all clear was given we mobiliz3ed some of our volunteers and we were giving out two hundred tarps in the Jane Usher area.  So right now we have a hundred and fifty tarps loaded in these vehicles and they are heading out to the Yarborough and Kunkulung area this afternoon. We have volunteers at the headquarters giving out clothing. If you are in need of clothing the volunteers are at the headquarters. We have a team of volunteers there. We have these wonderful volunteers here doing assessments and giving out tarps. We usually give out tarps, cleaning supplies, medical kits, food if we have any, mattresses if we have any.”

“I have been a volunteer with the Belize Red Cross from 2008. I volunteered and went on my own to pursue certain stuff. But I have seen the destruction and what Hurricane Lisa has caused to Belize. So I thought it was necessary to rejoin the Belize Red Cross and give back to our country to help the people. The people of Belize are crying. We need help. And so we are out here giving of our energy to give back.”
