Management of Holy Cross Anglican School Pay Teachers Overdue Salaries

One day after teachers of Holy Cross Anglican Primary School in San Pedro told us that some of them had not been paid for two months and others had not received their hardship allowances, we received news that they have now gotten their salary. One of the teachers, Carol Canelo, who spoke to News Five at the school on Monday, informed us today that the seven teachers whose salaries were outstanding for the past two months were paid today. One of those teachers is a young, first-time mother who is still on maternity leave. Canelo said that the Belize National Teachers Union President, Elena Smith is now working out other issues with the school’s management, such as the teachers’ hardship allowances and other concerns they have. The teachers called us out there on Monday to express their frustration that despite their best efforts to get the school’s management to meet their commitments, they were basically brushed off. One of them who is on the B.N.T.U district executive had even reportedly written to the school’s principal requesting some kind of response in black and white, but that request had gone unanswered, she said. Of the seventeen teachers at the school, fourteen walked out on Monday, vowing that they would remain away from classes if they were not paid.
