Evacuees Came By Boats and Planes and Went Inland by Busloads

They came by plane and boat from the islands. From before the workday started at eight a.m., water taxi tenders and commercial flights were leaving San Pedro and Caye Caulker, their destination, Belize City. The ferries and planes were bringing people who did not want to risk experiencing gusts upwards of eighty miles an hour that Hurricane Lisa is very likely to bring with it, on an island. Planes were grounded by two p.m., and the last boat arrived around four this evening. But as our cameras picked up, based on luggage, or some special memento that the travelers carried, many of them did not make Belize City their final stop. When we went over to the bus terminal on West Collet Canal this afternoon, a lot of the people who crowded the buses were those who had just come off a boat at the water taxi terminals. They were heading further inland to brace for the impact of Lisa. And from the number of buses that were leaving the terminal, they were heading in all directions, assumedly to be with family or friends.
