B.E.L. Works to Maintain Power in Midst of Lisa

Belize Electricity Limited says it will do its best to keep the power on throughout the storm. While this may be highly unlikely, according to Zane Fitzpatrick, the Safety Coordinator at B.E.L., the only time the company will cut electricity is if a fallen power line puts lives at risk. Here is what he told us via Zoom.

Zane Fitzpatrick, Safety Coordinator, Belize Electricity Limited

“B.E.L.’s plan basically stems around ensuring we have electricity during the process of the storm, basically keeping the public safe, the community we serve safe, and also to protect our asset so that we can continue to produce after the storm. That in essence is what the plan surrounds. The safety of our team, the community we serve and our assets. As a part of our plan, we plan to keep electric on during the passage of the storm unless it becomes unsafe to do so. Meaning if someone or a property is at risk we will turn off that part of the grid. So, we will keep electricity on and typically when we have outages it is a result of debris or vegetation making contact with our lines. WE have a fail system that when that happens the line will trip. That is what causes theses during the passage of a storm.”
