Freetown Area Rep. on Redistricting: Let’s Wait for the Results
Another current topic that will make for interesting news when it is completed is the redistricting exercise. Currently there are thirty-one constituencies across the country, with boundaries that range from a few blocks, as in the case of Mesopotamia in Belize City, to several miles, as in the case of Stann Creek West. How many divisions will emerge from that exercise is anyone’s guess but what is certain is that existing standard bearers and serving area representatives stand to lose or gain voters, depending on where the new divisional lines are drawn. Fonseca, whose Freetown constituency in the 2020 General Elections had three thousand, seven hundred and eighty-two voters, said he’d rather not attempt to pre-empt the process or how Freetown would be affected at the completion.
Francis Fonseca, Area Representative, Freetown
“That’s an exercise being conducted by the Elections and Boundaries Commission so that’s an independent exercise – independent of the government – so we will have to wait and see what their analysis shows and their report that they will table, then we’ll be able to discuss that properly.”
