Short, Medium, and Long-Term Plans Identified for Sarstoon Forward Operating Base

The Forward Operating Base at the mouth of the Sarstoon River has been rendered uninhabitable – at least for night-time occupancy because of the force of the tidal waves on the foundation of the structure. But there is an immediate, a medium-term and a long-term plan for that facility. Today, Commandant of the B.D.F., Brigadier General Azariel Loria explained to News Five what those plans are.

“The C.E.O. in the Ministry of National Defence and some government engineers along with Mr. Cadet Henderson as a consultant – we went there to see what could be done in order for us to rebuild the F.O.B, so with the professional assistance of the engineers, a paper has been submitted to – or will be submitted – to Cabinet in which the appropriate steps are being recommended. For the short-term it is the engineers are recommending for the building to be braced. That is the short-term and it will cost somewhere around d fifty thousand dollars.

The medium-term is to try to see how we could build a boom or a retaining wall and the longer term is for us to construct that boom and the F.O.B itself to withstand a strong hurricane – category five hurricane, but that’s in the future.”

For the time being, the B.D.F. soldiers who are posted at the facility retreat at night-time to the Coast Guard’s base at Barranco Village.
