Y.W.C.A. Charts New Direction At A.G.M.

The Young Women’s Christian Association has been around for the past sixty-six years, training Belize’s underprivileged young women on how to become their own micro and small enterprise owners. A part of that training also comes with basic education. But at its Annual General Meeting held at the end of September, the “Y” elected new officers to its executive board and charted new areas where it wants to offer young women training. It’s Secretary-General, Diane Haylock shared them with News Five today and says the “Y” is once again open for business.

“We’re back in the driver’s seat, so-to-speak, making it possible for us to continue to service the young women, the girls, and our children, generally, so I feel very optimistic about the future of the organization. As our theme said, we’re “Moving Boldly Onwards,” and so we are in the process of trying to look at a new or improved or expanded strategic direction for the organization so we’re starting that process now. We’ll have a lot of the things that we’ve done in the past. I mean these are some tried and true programs that the organization has had but we’re also trying to look at new things. For instance, if you just look at the courses right now that we’re doing, we want to be able to see how we can offer additional kinds of training opportunities for women. We want to begin to focus more regularly in a systematic way on actually continuing to challenge the gender-equality issues, the gender-equity issues and overall, women’s empowerment.”
