B.B.A.’s Judicial Review in Hands of Attorney General, Says Transport Minister

As we have reported, the Belize Supreme Court granted the Belize Bus Association judicial review in a case it is bringing against Floralia and the Department of Transport. B.B.A. is contending that there are improprieties in relation to Floralia’s entry into to the public transportation system. We caught up with Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson over the weekend in Belize City where we asked him for a comment on the court’s decision and the way forward.

“In terms of the judicial review, basically that is in the purview of the Attorney General. We already presented to her our part of the case and hope that when we go to court that we are successful. But again, everybody have the right to use the court of Belize. At the end of the day, whatever there circumstances we have to accept and work with what the court says, because we are a democratic country. But, I feel very cognizant that we are going to be victorious. If not, then we have to proceed as planned. When Floralia came into existence, I said this is what I want to see in Belize, 2022 buses. So, when they made the proposition I said we are going to work with you to see how it can be done, because we live in a free economy, competition is real and makes a country grows. And, transportation is what makes a country goes around. Without transportation then nothing will happen. We have to provide adequate and reasonable transportation for the people and they must have a choice in what they want to ride.”
