Transport Minister to Belize Bus Association “I want to see the transformation”

Rodwell Ferguson

And, as we have told you the Minister of Transport has set a deadline for December to allow members of the Belize Bus Association time to present their plan of action for mandatory upgrades to their fleet of buses. The deadline has caused quite a stir among bus operators, but Minister Ferguson says those operators were given enough time to prepare for this next phase.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport

“Right now the Ministry of Transportation is going through a reform with a study from the IDB. We have some consultants in right now, and we want to have maybe tier one, tier two, tier three, so you the community to decide which bus they want to ride. But, we can’t stop you because you come with a better quality. What we have is inadequate. I am very frank with that. We have school buses, some of them thirty-five years old which should never be on the highways.”

Paul Lopez

“They are essentially saying that by December first is too short a time, laughing it off the table even.”

Rodwell Ferguson

“I gave them that deadline a year and a half ago. Initially it was for June 2022 and extended to December 2022. That does not mean that all the busses go off the road immediately. I want to see the transformation begin December 2022 as the Minister of Transportation, as the Ministry responsible we will decide what will happen after that.”
