Henry Charles Describes Price and Queen Elizabeth as “Bitter Adversaries”

Earlier we brought you the memorial held at the gravesite of the late George Price in recognition of his contributions to Belize. Coincidentally, September nineteenth was also the date when Queen Elizabeth the Second was being laid to rest in the United Kingdom. They were two leaders who held firmly to their philosophies, and while they met on a few occasions, they did not share the same ideals. In fact, Price’s grand-nephew, Minister Henry Charles Usher describes them as “bitter adversaries” and explains that Belize will take a closer look at our system of governance and who is our head of state.

“Mr. Price and Queen Elizabeth were bitter adversaries for many years but they are joined symbolically in death as today is the day Mr Price passed away and today happens to be the day that Queen Elizabeth was laid to rest. Certainly we want to pass on our thoughts and prayers and condolences with the Royal Family, with the UK, and with all of the Commonwealth on the passing of Her Majesty.  I believe that we are in the process of looking at the way we are governed, looking at our Head of State. We have established a People’s Constitutional Commission that will be looking at questions such as this. So this is an exercise that the people of Belize must decide on. They will have that opportunity to both consult, offer their opinions, offer their recommendations and to have the final say in the form of a referendum.”
