The U.D.P. Discusses Politics and the Redistricting Exercise

Collet Montejo

The resignation of Martin Aldana from the Redistricting Task Force has raised serious questions about the alleged politicization of the ongoing redistricting exercise.  Aldana, a statistical analyst, stepped down as a member of the working group citing that the reason for his resignation is, “my observation that the work of the task force is being influenced by actors outside of the task force”. This afternoon, Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow discussed the issue and called for the removal of P.U.P. Senator Collet Montejo from the task force.  Viewers would recall that the United Democratic Party objected to Montejo’s appointment as field supervisor for the redistricting process.

“The Briceño administration got elected on a platform of strengthening democracy, depoliticizing the politicization that they accused the Barrow administration of doing and with Collet Montejo as one of the senior members of the redistricting exercise.  Collet Montejo is not just a P.U.P. senator, but who is in Guatemala with Jorge Espat giving out schoolbags to alleged Belizeans who are supposed to be registered in his constituency, but according to the People’s Representation Act, you can’t be registered in a constituency if you don’t even live in Belize.  Noh if yoh live eena di constituency because yoh got lotta people weh might register eena wahn constituency but dehn end up di move and dehn neva transfer.  These people don’t even live in Belize.”
