Team Belize Wins Historic Bronze Medal in U-19 Central American Male Volleyball

Belize won bronze in Honduras. The Under-19 Central American Male Volleyball Championship was held in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras, this week. Team Belize won the bronze medal, the first bronze in the nation’s history in this category. Team Belize also took home five individual awards for best scorer, second best spiker, best server, best opposite, and best setter. We heard from a few members of the team, courtesy of the Belize Volleyball Association.


Nicanor Requena

“In this tournament we were prepared for it through the help of Coach Humes, Coach Wallace, and Coach Emil the Cuban Coach. We feel that we were well prepared. As captain, I had a lot of energy and drive to perform my very best and to make sure that I lead this team to palace in this tournament.”


Preston Smith

“I felt good with my performance. It felt good having the crowd cheering against us and us getting the points one by one. We worked hard and ended up coming in with a bronze medal. For next tournament we shall do better.”


Eleazar Mejia

“Well basically, making history I feel like this is a moment Belize has been waiting for since a good while. Since the first game we have been striving to beat Guatemala. That is a big win. That is already a history for Belize. But, getting a medal for Belize in this category, it makes me feel great. In a sense, I hope and I am proud that we as a team continues unite and continue strive and forward, because I know there are many more medals to come.”
