Bus Operators Want Duty Exemption, Access to More Funding, and Foreign Busses Gone

Aside from the issue that the bus operators have with Floralia, they are also making additional requests, including duty exemption on their imported buses, more funds than the National Bank is willing to lend, and buses from Mexico and Guatemala to stop running through Belize.

“The National Bank – again I’ll come back to them – they are willing to lend us up to a hundred and fifty thousand dollars to buy one bus. Now wa brand new 2022 wa run yoh half a million US (dollars) so even within our system here, not even our local banks or the institutions that are willing to work with us want to give us that kind of money. We need all duty exemptions, so we could tek da money and get weh wi need fi get. We could get soh nice bus fi a hundred and fifty thousand dollars, providing wi nuh have to pay duty and dehn things fi bring deh in.”

“They are trying to introduce back the Mexican and Guatemalan busses coming through Belize. And we are strictly saying no to that. The reason we’re saying no to that is because the market already has too many operators. We stand – the Premier Charters and Tours group believes that if we’re not allowed to go across the Mexican side – they had recently drafted up that we’re only allowed like twelve point five kilometers into Chetumal, so basically Chetumal, Quintana Roo area, a small area. So we cannot conduct business to Cancun and so forth. We don’t mind they only come to Corozal. The same that they offer us we would like to offer them back. We don’t see the need for them to come from border to border while we still exist here in Belize. Many reasons: they don’t buy fuel through here, they don’t pay tax. So all the reason they are coming for is just to use us, basically; likewise with the Guatemalans.”
