B.P.F. Leader Criticizes Cayo West Area Rep for “Clientelism”

Nancy Marin

The Belize People’s Front leader has criticized Cayo West Area Representative, Jorge Milin Espat for visiting and distributing schoolbags among Belizean voters who live in Guatemala. Nancy Marin calls the recent visit “clientelism” and she has also called for the resignation of the recently appointed member for the redistricting task force, Senator Collet Montejo, who accompanied Espat on the trip. In a press release issued by the B.P.F., it states that, “The visit and the voter-registration manipulations that allow for Guatemalans to be registered as Belizean voters are fruits of the continued violation of section twenty-nine, three of Constitution of Belize. According to the Constitution, no person shall be entitled to Belizean citizenship if such person shows any allegiance to or is a citizen of a country which does not recognize the independence, sovereignty or territorial integrity of Belize”.

“For Mr. Espat to go and worse in the company of Mr. Montejo, who has direct influence to go to Guatemala to continue this clientelism with Guatemalans who should not be on the voters list, it is a slap in the face to Belizeans and all Belizeans should be appalled. And for him to say he has no apology and compare it to diasporans in the United States and in other countries, it is really hypocritical of him because I lived in the United States; I have relatives in the United States that can’t vote in Belize.”

Espat has said that the people he visited are registered Belizean voters who happen to live in Guatemala, just like any other Belizean voter who lives elsewhere.
