Soldiers to Travel to Mexico for Intermediate/Advance Spanish Lessons

General Azariel Lori

B.D.F. Commander, Brigadier General Azariel Loria himself is participating in the program and says that it will help the soldiers to engage with Asian nationals in Belize who speak Mandarin. But what about teaching them to speak Spanish or even Maya and Garifuna? Across the country, there are communities who speak one of these languages. Belize is the only English-speaking Central American country, bordered by Guatemala and Mexico where Spanish is the first language. Loria says that several members of the force are also going to travel to Mexico to learn Spanish.

Brigadier General Azariel Loria, Commander, B.D.F.

“About fifty percent of the Belizean population or even more perhaps talks Spanish. But it is basic Spanish that we know how to talk. We have Mexico that has come forward and requested if we wanted to do Spanish courses in Mexico to which we have readily accepted. So I think there are about four or five persons that will be going to Mexico to learn the intermediate because the basic Spanish we kinda know it already. But we need to advance in our language skills when it comes to Spanish. So five are going on the intermediate and five on the advance, graciously offered by the Mexicans. So we are trying to fine-tune our Spanish.”
