Godfrey Smith Joins Guyana’s Commission of Inquiry

Senior Counsel and Acting Justice of Appeal in the Eastern Caribbean, Godfrey Smith took an oath of office this morning in Georgetown, Guyana where he joined Stanley John, Retired Justice of Appeal of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Justice Carl Singh, Retired Chancellor of the Judiciary of Guyana.  They are the Commissioners of Inquiry into apparent attempts to manipulate the general and regional elections in Guyana back in 2020.  Earlier today, Attorney General Anil Nandlall said that the inquiry seeks to probe the threat to Guyana’s democracy through, “flagrant attempts made to alter unlawfully the results of those elections at several stages of the protest”.  There were at least two declarations by the then Returning Officer for Region Four and one effort to remove more than one hundred thousand votes by the former  Chief Elections Officer after the recount.  This morning’s swearing-in before Chief Magistrate Ann Elizabeth McLennan was introduced by Colonel Francis Abraham, the Guyanese government’s Chief of Protocol.
