Fifty New Street Cameras for Belize City
The Belize Police Department is employing several strategies to fight crime within Belize City. One such strategy being employed is the installation of surveillance cameras in different neighbourhoods. The Minister of Home Affairs recently announced that his ministry is acquiring fifty new street cameras through CABEI. The Commissioner of Police told reporters how these new cameras will assist in its efforts.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Certainly the city is to some extent a huge area and it is very complex in its own way. The demographic of it is also a challenging one, especially when you look at the Southside of the city. While we have about eighty eight cameras in the city, majority of those cameras are on the south side of Belize City and more in the gang ridden and commercial areas. When it comes to the north side we don’t have many cameras there. Certainly, with the addition of fifty cameras, we want to look at certain areas on the north side, as well as injecting more of these cameras in the gang ridden areas of the city. The objectiv3e here is to make sure that we cover as much grounds as we can, utilizing surveillance cameras to be able to prevent and detect crime when they occur in these areas. I can tell you we are currently working on a protecting the King’s Park Area where a number of business places have donated cameras. We have gotten confirmation for four and those will be placed in the King’s Park Area of the city, should be installed before the end of this month.”
