The north side of Ambergris Caye came alive on the Tenth of September, with the festive launch of a My Lights branch on the island. The Pan Tempters Steel Band was out in full swing, wowing visitors to the lush sounds of steel pan music. Belize’s flag adorned the property from rooftop to ground, a reminder of the September Celebrations. Even Prime Minister John Briceño was present to cut the ribbon alongside business owner Sanju Chulani.

“So, we did exist in San Pedro in 2021 but we were in a very small location on Pescador Drive. We couldn’t display most of our items and so we got an opportunity from the owners of Captain Morgan to do this joint venture in building this store over here. That is why we came on the north side and we know that San Pedro is going more on the north and so we want to be the first out here.”
The store features a wide a variety of items on sale. While the lights on display along the underwater themed ceiling are the main attraction, there are plenty items within the store for the entire family to choose from.
“The idea is to get more types of lights, different types of light. We do have solar equipments. We have solar batteries. We have solar water heaters, solar water pumps, solar generators, solar fans, solar lights, solar speakers, so it doesn’t end. And, I don’t see that in San Pedro. We started in Belize City and we started to grow.”
“It is not only lights that you offer to your customers. There is a wide variety of other products here.”
Sanju Chulani
“Well, see I want to catch the entire family out here. When somebody comes to buy lights they come along with their kids and their wives. I want to catch the whole family. So, lights and then you have the little toys for the kids, and other house items.”
Businessman Chulani and Prime Minister John Briceño are friends, but the prime minister says that he also supports My Lights because of the business’ push to provide solar alternatives to residents on the island.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“Mr. Sanju and his family we are friends, we are personal friends. So, when he invited me to come I felt it was an honor to come here. But, also I love what the idea is behind the business to try to promote more renewable sources of energy, solar lighting, especially in the island of San Pedro where the protection of our natural resource are of paramount importance. It brings across the right message that we are moving away from diesel fuel from more renewable sources of energy and in this case it is solar. So, I felt that it is important to come and to show my support to My Lights and to show people not to only support them but that in the other parts of the country we can start to come up with this concept of trying to promote more renewable energy, in this case for your lights, for your home, for your yards and even for the streets and the parks.”
All members of staff from the smaller location remain employed with the company inside its much larger site. All hands were on deck for Saturday’s grand opening, as customers flocked the store to make their purchases.
Sanju Chulani
“They are excited. My staff from San Pedro is very excited. They are working hard. We have been almost two weeks pushing hard for this day. Here we are. It means a lot. It means how much we care for each other. I have a very great my family support of course. I wrote to the PM and I said in a big occasion like that if I could have him why not. I wrote to him and he said yes he will.”
