Security in September, Maintaining Peace across the Country
Since the start of September, Belizeans have been in celebration mode. Police officers, on the other hand, have been busy patrolling the streets, as well as keeping the peace at several major events. With a number of activities still scheduled to take place for the remainder of the month, ComPol Williams says the Belize Police Department will continue to be out in full force.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“One of our strategy was to make sure the carnival reaches its location before night set in. We would not have wanted the carnival to still be happening during night time. That w9ould have posed significant challenge to us. So, you would have seen me at the head of the parade pulling the parade because I wanted it to get to Marion Jones by four thirty, at least the head, and the tail would have gotten there by five thirty. With that then the judging and everything would have been done by six and by six thirty we could say we are done. We were able to achieve that, thank god for that. Again, the carnival went without incident. Likewise, we had the jouvert without incident. We had, on Saturday the Tenth parade, the Tenth Bram, again without any incident. Over the weekend, we also had the Martin’s Day without any incident. So, there is a lot we are doing to make sure we are policing these events effectively to provide a level of safety to our people. But again, I want to emphasize to the Belizean people you all have your role to play in your own safety. Once you go out and behave in an orderly manner then there is no need to be worried about the police.”
