What Will N.G.O.’s Do Next? “We Will Continue to Ask the Questions.”

So where does this leave the N.G.O.s on these important matters? Chanona said they will continue to press and ask the questions to get more clarity.

Senator Janelle Chanona, V.P., OCEANA, Belize

“Many of us in civil society also feel a pressing responsibility to also call out and to ask these questions and keep asking these questions until there’s clarity in that position. There’s simply too much to risk and I don’t see that as we strive for new jobs, which I think collectively everybody wants to see – sustainable development, meaningful jobs, long-term jobs, that we’re not risking the jobs that are already there because that would also compromise – those opportunities would also create a slippery slope that nobody wants to go down. So like I said, we’re still trying to unpack the letter, what it says and what it says between the lines, but certainly, we will continue to ask these questions because these are shared natural resources and there should be clarity so that everybody understands, and as I said, I have no shame in saying I’m still very confused about the state of play and I would like that clarity and I think as a Belizean, in terms of being a marine advocate, that we deserve that clarity.”
