Road Repairs for Most of Philip Goldson Highway to Begin

Dilapidated culverts along the Philip Goldson Highway are in the process of being replaced over the next few months. The replacements are part of a bigger project that the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing is undertaking to upgrade from mile eight all the way through to the northern border. Chief Engineer, Lennox Bradley says that the work has already been contracted.

“We have several culverts that really have reached the end of their useful life and we intend to replace them.  That entire road is on contract, part of it the contract works have not started yet – that’s between miles eight point five to mile twenty-four, but the contracts have already been signed for some months, practically a year I would say between mile twenty-four right up to the Corozal border with Mexico. Also the Corozal bi-pass which we refer to as the Rimate Road, that is part of it. I think we have at least sixty-nine point something miles of road that will be upgraded to paved standard, and not only paved but at least to accommodate heavy axle loads because we want to raise from eight point two five to nine tons per axle.”
