C.E.O. Tanya Santos on DV: “We need to send a message that it will not be tolerated anymore”

Earlier today, we got a chance to speak with Tanya Santos the C.E.O in the Ministry of Human Development who commented on the high number of domestic violence reports in Belize. Here are her thoughts on how these acts of gender-based violence can be decreased.

“It is the same child abuse, that these men and the women who abuse men also feel that it is their right to hit a woman, that it is their right to control and to abuse and to hurt a woman or a man in the other case. It never is, and domestic violence and dealing with domestic victims and survivors is not easy. There is time when there is intervention after intervention and intervention, and it is really up to the mother, to the woman, to take that step out. But, on the other hand, we have to deal with the perpetrators. We seem to have this concept in our mind that the woman has to do something about the violence against her. Yes, she wants to survive. But, he has to do something about the violence he is inflicting. I think we are also not paying sufficient attention to what is happening on that side. It could be that we are not doing enough in that arena. It could be that there are other entities that could work more in the area of the violence that is being inflicted. It could also be that in our legal system. We have to impose the right penalties and we have to become more aware that these perpetrators, we have to send a message that it will not be tolerated anymore.”
