Ministry of Blue Economy Weighs Economic Impact of Angelfish Caye Resort
And, while the E.I.A. for the proposed eco-resort on Angelfish Caye is being looked at, the Ministry of Blue Economy must weigh the economic impact. Angelfish Caye L.L.C. says the resort will provide employment for the residents of Hopkins Village. Like the proposed port expansion project, C.E.O. Carillo says her ministry is looking at this one closely.
Kennedy Carillo, C.E.O., Ministry of Blue Economy
“We know that the Ministry has been working, the Ministry of Ports has been working on a policy, but as you can imagine it is such an important, sometimes controversial topic, that even in their consultations they have ran into some challenges. So, they are working on it. That is all I can tell you. They are working on it. For us in our policy for blue economy it was also a process where we had to engage partners and we had to answer some of the tough questions in terms of ports, in terms of reserves. We see what is happening with Angel Fish, that is a reserve, a mangrove reserve, and we have people that want to do some development there. And these are challenges that as a ministry we have to always ensure we have that balance. Blue Economy is not really and environmental ministry, it is an economy ministry, so we have the responsibility to move the economy of this country through the use of our marine space. But, we also have to ensure we are preserving and conserving our capital, our blue capital, which is why we have these reserves in place, and we have to voice when we feel it is going against the principles of the ministry.”
