Minister Ferguson: Request for Help for Power-lifting Team Came Late

Rodwell Ferguson

Four men and four women are representing Belize at the North American Power-lifting Federation’s Regional Classic Power-lifting Championships in Panama this week. But there was criticism that the team went without receiving much assistance through the Belize Power-lifting Association from the Ministry of Sports. Today, Minister of Sports Rodwell Ferguson clarified that matter. He said all sporting associations and teams need to register with the National Sports Council in order to legitimize themselves. And in this particular instance, the request came a little too late.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Sports

“We did not receive any letter from Power-lifting (Association) until the ninth when the commotion started. We were still able to give them fifteen hundred dollars towards their trip. It might sound minute but they don’t know the amount of requests we get every day and try to assist in whatever way we can with the limited resources we have. We made a contribution of fifteen hundred dollars. I wish them every success and hope that when they come back in Belize they can bring us some good tidings.”
