Minister of Public Service Says Moises Cal Has the Experience to Chair

Moises Cal

Public objection to the naming of Moises Cal as government’s choice to chair the Public Service Commission has ended with Cal withdrawing himself from consideration. The rejection surrounded allegations made against the former ambassador in 2007, that he attempted to launder a large amount of money while traveling through Panama on his diplomatic passport. Today, the media got a chance to ask Minister of the Public Service, Henry Charles Usher to weigh in on the recent nomination of Cal for the post. Usher said that Cal had the wherewithal for the job.

“What is important is Mr. Cal has a good grasp of management of administration and being the Chairman of the Public Services Commission includes that. I think it’s important to understand you don’t really need a lot of experience in public service. You do need to be familiar with the Public Service Regulations. It’s someone that the Prime Minister felt had the capacity to get the job done. He followed the rules and the law. He consulted with the Leader of the Opposition and well, Mr. Cal has now removed his name.”

Now that he has declined the offer, Prime Minister John Briceño will have to put forward another recommendation and will need to also consult with the Leader of the Opposition on that recommendation.
