Salvadoran National Pleads Guilty to Rape of Child, Sentenced to Fifteen Years

A Salvadoran national living in Belize was sentenced to fifteen years in prison after pleading guilty to the rape of a five-year-old child. Bairo Gomez was accused of the crime back in October of 2018. During his arraignment, Gomez was considered a flight risk. As a result, he was placed on remand at the Belize Central Prison. On June twenty-ninth, 2022, over three years later, Gomez pleaded guilty to the offense, sparing his young victim from having to testify against him and reliving the horrific ordeal. On July twelfth 2022, Gomez threw himself at the mercy of the court and begged for leniency, during a mitigation plea hearing before Justice Susan Lamb in the Supreme Court. He apologized for his action, telling the court how sorry he was for what he had done back in 2018.  That day, Justice Lamb also heard sentencing guidelines from the crown which was represented by Crown Counsel Rome Wade of the D.P.P.’s office.  For his guilty plea, Justice Lamb took into consideration the years he has served on remand, leaving Gomez with eleven years and two months left to serve. Fifteen years is the minimum mandatory sentence that can be handed down by law for the offense of rape of a child upon conviction.
