No Signs of Tracey Betancourt, a Fugitive of the Law

She was supposed to show up to court last Monday, after being out on bail for her alleged role in the murder of an American restaurateur in San Pedro four years ago.  Her alleged accomplice, Leon Walford, has been found guilty and is awaiting sentencing, but where is Tracey Betancourt?  Tonight, she remains on the lam, despite a bench warrant for her arrest and wanted posters being issued by the Belize Police Department.  The twenty-five-year-old has not been seen or heard from since she decided not to appear in court on July twenty-eighth.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

An all-points bulletin has been issued for the arrest of Tracey Betancourt.  The twenty-five-year-old skipped a court appearance on July twenty-eighth when Justice Ricardo Sandcroft handed down a guilty verdict against Leon Walford.  The two were accused of committing a heinous murder in San Pedro back in May 2018, when an American national was shot and killed inside his restaurant.  Forty-nine-year-old Lamont Lipka was executed inside Tropicana Bar and Grill when a man, later identified as Walford, entered the establishment and fired multiple shots at the Texan businessman.

“Upon inspection inside the business place, police observed behind the counter, the motionless body of a male person bleeding profusely with several gunshot wounds to the body.  What we have gathered so far is that just about 9:25, he was inside the business establishment, behind the cash register when a male person entered and went direct to him and fired several shots at his direction which cause the fatal injuries to him.”

At the time of Lipka’s murder, investigators could not ascertain a motive.  What they were able to determine at the scene of the deadly shooting was that nothing was stolen from the restaurant.

“We don’t have a motive up to now.  We are interviewing some of his colleagues to see if they have anything that can assist us at this moment.  Definitely, from what we have so far, there is nothing that we can tie him to any drug transaction or drug-related offense.”

On July twenty-eighth, Betancourt, who was out on a fifty thousand dollar bail, was scheduled to appear before Justice Sandcroft to learn her fate.  She never made it to court that day and a bench warrant was later issued.  It’s been one week since a warrant for her arrest was announced.  Since then, Tracey Betancourt remains a fugitive of the law.
