Ministry of Health, Wellness Promotes Workplace Wellness

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is in the process of promoting what is known as workplace wellness within the public and private sectors. The effort focuses on encouraging everyone within the workplace to engage in positive, healthy activities that promote better health. Today, the ministry spearheaded a session with senior public officers within the various ministries on what its goals and objectives are for this campaign. The ministry’s Public Health and Wellness Director, Doctor Melissa Musa told us that you’d be surprised how little things, if allowed in the workplace, would assist with better health and wellness.

“We started with the public sector, we’ve invited about sixty managers, supervisors, administrative officers who manage groups of persons and we did numerous presentations. We had a nutritionist, we had a bio-statistician and we’re trying to promote health and wellness in your working environment, and also how to promote breastfeeding in your workplace, how to do things in your workplace outside of the norm, so probably encouraging the staff to stand up, to walk around for fifteen minutes if you’ve been sitting down for very long, and being flexible with breastfeeding mothers if necessary, having a healthy space, having fruits for snacks because sometimes you might be working two or three hours and you’re hungry and you might just buy something that’s not nutritious – so trying to promote all of that. And we will start to visit these bigger ministries and see what can be done in that space to encourage a healthier work environment. We’re also working on a health booklet with numbers that you can call, counseling that you can access, the N-DACC team, that the drug abuse council team, if there’s alcohol abuse, smoking – whatever the case (may be) we want to have something that you in your work place can pick up a leaflet of booklet and make that call and get the help that’s needed.”
