Bar Association’s Role in the Improved Judicial System

Hector Guerra

With the pending amalgamation of the court system, where will the legal fraternity fall within this new arrangement and what will its role be?

Hector Guerra, Vice President, Bar Association

“The bar really is here to support the judiciary.  Of course, we interact with the court system on a daily basis and so, we see our role as one where we assist litigants to navigate through the new structure that will be put in place.  And, of course, in these formative stages we’ve found our role to be one of providing information to the learned attorney general who has been receptive to our views so far.  I don’t want to forget to mention that what the bill is envisioning is also one where the Supreme Court will be renamed to a more appropriate name which will now be called the High Court.  So it’s a more befitting name, of course belies what it really is because it’s not our apex court, that of course, is the Chief Justice and so, this new bill renames the Supreme Court as the High Court. There are other changes as well, for example, the bill is envisioning the creation of specialized courts which will see certain judges being put in charge of areas where they have specialization.  This, again, will assist with unburdening the court as the case load becomes ever-increasing in a world where litigation is becoming common.”
