Lait Up Belize Provides Support to Belize’s Energy Efficient Frame Work Initiative

The Lait Up Belize Project, an initiative of the European Union, is providing the financial support needed for the Belize Bureau of Standards to develop its energy efficient labeling framework. What we are supported to do by the European Union is to work with partners like B.B.S. to support this capacity building, for example. So, we have a budget to support this event. We have a budget to support travel expenses for A.N.C.E. or otherwise and otherwise training so that this is possible for the Belizean stakeholders. I will also introduce the topic of the customs officials, the retailers, the sales people on the floor at Courts should understand what the energy efficiently label is all about. And so, it is an awareness program. But, as we know awareness takes time. So we are very happy to prepare materials. It will be the first. There will be others. There will be pamphlets, events, where we will possibly have events at the retailer so that when customers are coming at the retailers, they can say what this is about, why is the labels are here and there can be material to inform them. That also touches on question you raised about the carrot or the stick, I think it is the carrot. I think you will see that retailers will quickly shift product, they will sell product, they will have product when they have products that comply. It will quite soon happen that the market will transform. It does take time, because people are not buying or replacing cars, refrigerators, or A.C. Units. But you can already see it, the A.C. units in Belize are slowly but quite noticeably shifting to more efficient inverter based technology.”
