Opposition Senators Rejects 75 U.S. Loan Motion

Opposition senators also weighed in on the matter of the seventy-five million U.S. dollar loan from the Government of Taiwan. Highlighting the financial plight that Belizeans across the country are facing with the rise in cost of basic good, Opposition senators criticized the government for its borrowing practices.

“We are at a point where in the households, the families, there are numerous Belizeans who are suffering at this time, the cost of living, the cost of goods, and we are seeing the increases daily, day in, day out, the cost of basic commodities going up, going up, and our salaries yet are remaining the same . The cost of fuel for instance, eggs, flour, basic households needs. So, we have a responsibility to the public, where the government says we are rebounding, but it is not trickling down to the everyday Belizean. That is where the cause for concern is. And, we are looking yet at another loan motion which will further bury us in debt.”

Tony Herrera

“When you go to the store, I remember, mom sends you with a twenty bills and you come back with a nice bag of things. Twenty dollars buy you the bag now, not the groceries. A hundred dollars is nothing at the stores. Inflations is so high, yet unu come for so much loans.”

Phillip Willoughby

Phillip Willoughby, Opposition Senator

“The most difficult thing for a decent human being, a good fearing person, is to get up right now and tell his children I can’t provide for you. I can’t pay the utilities. I can’t pay the rent. I can’t provide the basic food basket that they themselves may eat. Every four o’clock Mr. Myvette has to get up with his bicycle cart and pick up pint bottle to sell Bowen & Bowen and here we are playing with seventy five million U.S. dollar borrowing to what end?”
