Corozal House of Culture Reopens

The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) through the Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture officially reopened the Corozal House of Culture. The venue was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following some renovations on the building, the Corozal House of Culture was once again opened to the public on Saturday July ninth.  Present for the reopening ceremony was Francis Fonseca, the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology. Here is what he had to say.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture

“The National Institute of Culture and History is a critically important part of our work at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology. The houses of culture across the country really are the foundation of NICH, because it is these houses of culture that really engage with the community on a daily basis;  and that is where culture comes alive. That is where we have an opportunity to engage meaningfully with our communities, to engage our people on what culture means and the importance of culture in our national development. So, I am very happy that after two years, because of COVID obviously, the House of Culture was close down. Things kinda deteriorated inside anytime you lock up a building. So, we had to do a lot of work to refurbish and rehabilitate the building. But, I am very happy that the entire community came together. We worked along with the Area Representative. We worked along with the Corozal Town Council and of course the creative community in Corozal. Everybody was excited about reopening. So, I am very happy that today we have all these cultural groups that have joined us to say that we are back, opened, and as I said in my opening remarks, this House of Culture is for the people.
