Dr. Adrian Coye Receives the UWIAA Professional Excellence Apex Award

Today at the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Belize City, the Alumni Association bestowed the Professional Excellence Apex Award on Doctor Adrian Coye, a former graduate of the institution. It is issued annually by the association to an alumnus who is recognized for his or her professionalism and excellence – in Doctor Coye’s case, it’s in the field of medicine and cardiothoracic surgery. A brief ceremony was held at the campus and the media was there.

“The Professional Excellence Apex Awards were established by the Global UWI Alumni Chapters through the Office of the Director of Alumni Relations at the University of the West Indies as a call to recognize the tremendous work and contributions by a UWI alumni in their respective fields. This year, when the council nominated a potential awardee, it is safe to say that Doctor Adrian Coye ticked all the boxes. As Acting Director of Medical Services at the Karl Heusner Hospital, not only has he been a vanguard in the COVID-19 task force to control the spread and impact in this pandemic in Belize, but he has also continued to lead Belize’s only cardiothoracic program which has been saving and transforming lives one open heart surgery at a time.”

“I am very grateful for the recognition and I am sure that there are many more graduates that we have that are probably far more accomplished and have done so much more of the country. I just share in the pride that we have for our alma mater. All I have done is come home and work and do what I was trained to do and I think in many ways if I am to be an example it is that if we do what we are trained to do and do it well, then this country will be an amazing country to live in. It is already blessed by God in its natural beauty and in the people that it has, but it just needs more love – love to come from love of self and then love of country.”
