Electric Vehicle Owner in Belize Shares Experience

Electric vehicles are becoming the transportation of choice across the world. E.V.s are considered to be more cost efficient and environmentally friendly than fuel powered vehicles. And, with the increasing cost of fuel, making the switch is almost a no-brainer. In Belize, Ruth Esquivel is among the first to own an electric vehicle. Esquivel purchased a Nissan Leaf five years ago and she has not looked back to fuel-powered vehicles since. Today, she told us via zoom why she believes there should be a greater push to have more E.V.s in Belize.

“When I brought in the vehicle, it really was nothing to do with finance. It was environmental and geo political. Gas vehicles are very bad for the environment and the countries we typically source gas from have not so great human rights records. So, really it has nothing to do with the cost of gas. As I mentioned I had my vehicle going on for five years, this is when gas was like eight dollars a gallon. But certainly, having the vehicle now I cannot see that I will ever return to a gas vehicle because my original reasons have not changed, but the price of gas has skyrocketed so much. So, back when gas was about eight dollars, I would spend about four and five hundred dollars a month in gas. My electricity bill has gone up by maybe seventy five dollars for the month. So, that is a drastic difference, and gas is now twice what it was when I originally brought in the vehicle. So, you are looking at a fuel bill of eight hundred to a thousand dollar, compared to an electricity bill of maybe seventy five, a hundred dollars. So, that is a drastic difference. But, certainly beyond just the cost of gas, my maintenance has gone down because I use to service my gas vehicle every three to four months. With this it is like every nine to ten months. I use my same regular mechanic. I have to say he is actually great. It is not that he did any particular certification in electric vehicles. When I told him I was doing it, he went on Youtube and kinda thought himself what he would need to do. But, AC filters, brake pads, all of those things are the same. Under my engine looks very clean because there is no engine oil or that kinda thing. It is super quiet.”
