How Long Will Gang Turf War Over Weed Sales Continue?

Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa has quite a tough job spearheading government’s response to the scourge of crime and violence associated with the illegal marijuana trade. In his dual capacity as Minister of New Growth Industries, Musa mentioned during a one-on-one interview with News Five on Monday that the referendum will also determine whether Belizeans will allow the existing turf war over the sale of cannabis to keep going.

“Another point that will be decided is whether we want this gang turf war to continue or will we have greater control and regulation by the state.  Those are the issues that will be decided at the referendum, in my opinion, as opposed to legalizing cannabis.  Because, like I said, in 2017 that was essentially what was done. The government passed a motion in the house supported by both sides unanimously that decriminalized [marijuana] and so moving forward it is up to us as a population now to decide how will we make sense out of all of this.  Like I said, do we continue to just import what it is, we don’t even know what is in that cannabis from other countries, whether it’s Mexico or the United States, or will we produce on our own, create an economy around this particular plant and also create jobs and of course a new revenue stream for the government at a time when it is most needed.”
