ExportBelize Supports Fifteen Belizean Businesses in Expanding Export to UK and EU Markets

Fifteen Belizean agri-businesses are receiving support from an international business development agency through Export Belize, an arm of Beltraide, to take their products into new international markets. ExportBelize made a call in May of this year for local businesses to participate in this Agro-business Support Program. The program, which seeks to offer technical assistance to support export competitiveness in the sector, is being headed by Duggan International Group, a consultancy firm that specializes in international trade and full-service marketing. The Commonwealth Secretariat is funding the initiative which will run up to November of this year. We spoke with Shahera Mckoy, manager of ExportBelize, about the program via Zoom.

“Some of them already export, some of them are at a stage where they are ready to and are looking for that opportunity, but in any case, what this initiative does is to provide them expert guidance in looking at the product that you want to place in the European market, looking at existing competition there, looking at the market access requirement, and then providing recommendations of what these companies need to do to access that market. What the consultancy firm has done in some cases where it is possible is to actually bring some of those competing products that are being sold in the European market to show the companies that these are some of the products that you will be competing against. So, they get that feel of what it is they need to do to move to that level. So, the conversation during the mission visits is very specific to the product they want to place in that market. The work started even before these missions meeting, because each participating company completed an intake form that the consultancy firm provided. So, even before coming to Belize the consultancy firm started doing some assessment to see what is in the market, to look at what these companies are offering, some of the requirements and to see where the opportunities exist most for the products and companies in Belize.”
