Forty Third Regular Meeting of CARICOM HOG

The Forty-Third Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government ended with a press conference on Tuesday.  Prime Minister John Briceno handed over the chairmanship of CARICOM to President Chan Santohki of Suriname. President Santohki led the press conference with an overview of all that were accomplished over the last three days of deliberations. Scaling up the region’s climate finance in an effort to build greater resilience, as well as the political instability in Haiti was among the topics discussed. Here is President Santohki.

“We agreed to adopt a two pronged strategic program of action to scale up climate finance to us building our resilience. This would entail focus and efficacy underpinned by a regional coordinating mechanism and national capacity building to source and utilizes climate finance. We also agreed that the resource mobilization strategy would include support from the Caribbean Development Bank to mobilize development finance. We would also advocate strongly for the allocation of concessionary finance more fairly and equitable. This is a matter we impressed on the United Nations Secretary General. He was very critical on this topic. He promised his support to our community. The Secretary General also assured the Conference of his continued support in efforts to obtain debt relief, to reform international financial systems, and towards the use of a multi-dimensional vulnerability. We received an update on the situation in Haiti, exchanged views with their Prime Minister, and we took the opportunity to express grave concern at the deteriorating security situation in Haiti. The Prime Minister has responded also that his country is looking for more support and is also calling for the start of a dialogue on a national level to include all the people, all the institutions, and all the stakeholders to discuss a stable and a good future for Haiti. We agreed that the Bureau of Conference of CARICOM will be expanded to include the Prime Minister of St.Vincent and the Grenadines, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Jamaica, and also that we should express collective leadership towards Haiti. There is a team of Minister of Foreign Affairs that will take the lead. We had decided in Belize that team of CARICOM on the leadership of the Secretary General, should visit Haiti as a site visit and also to examine the situation in Haiti.”
