James Adderley has Sports Monday

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley so pull up for another portion of Sports Monday. The Belmopan Bandits came to Belize City looking for destiny – looking to make the B.F.L. playoffs for the first time in its five-year semi-pro history. All they needed was a victory against a winless Acros team at the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday.

Nevertheless it’s the city team with the quick start and Larry could well put Acros on the map, but his left foot won’t cut it. Downfield, Deon Frazier attacks for Capital City with too feeble a left foot to impress the scoreboard. It’s Acros now with the right man in the right situation to take the lead but John Trapp fails to find the target. Meanwhile folks Raul “El Coco” Gonzalez and John Trapp have the right idea on a collaborative effort but the angle proves too deep to be effective. On the next press, the pair tries to reverse the finish but “El Coco’s” long launch raises over the crossbar.

At the other end Wilhelm Coye looks for firing room as his shot inches outside the V. When it’s 32 minutes into the ballgame a floater reaches the head of Deon Frazier and just like that Belmopan takes the 1-zip lead. Acros immediately looks for the equalizer but Deon Rowland simply does not stay with this play with enough focus to score the equalizer. It’s almost the second of the match for Deon Frazier, but Frazier gets beaten to the ball by John Brooks and at the half Belmopan is up 1-nil.

In second half action it’s Deon Frazier again on the move but his right foot punch can’t get past John Brooks. Belmopan keeps the pressure on with this long shot out of midfield but again the launch inches outside the sticks. It’s getting late for the city team; will it be a winless second round? Well John Trapp can’t get his crowd going.

Acros gets one more shot to tie this ballgame but the header by Peter Jones is rejected by the goalkeeper. In driving rain when it’s not to be it’s not to be. And yes it’s more rain to drown the sorrows of the city football fans who will see no more B.F.L. games at the M.C.C. Grounds this season. While Belmopan makes the playoffs Acros goes winless.

In other B.F.L. news, the miraculous turn around for the Dangriga Jaguars under new coach Anthony Adderley continues when they hurt Yabra Tropical 3-1 but fall short by 2 points to make the playoffs. On Saturday at Independence Jube struggled to a 2 all stalemate with Sagitun to miss the playoffs, while up north at the People’s Stadium Juventus issued a 7-2 blast on Southern United but it was a friendly match since the P.G. team arrived 2 hours late after they had bus problems and B.N.F.A. President Dr. Bertie Chimilio called off the ball game.

Thus the four teams to make the playoffs are: Juventus of Orange Walk, La Victoria of Corozal, Sagitun of Mango Creek and of course the Bandits from Belmopan.

In basketball news from Orange Walk on Friday night La Costena edged Corozal Customs 79-75 in a friendly sizzler while on Saturday the B.D.F. marched past Rick’s Block and Tiles 81-79.

And yes that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place for another serving of Sports Monday. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
