Lake Independence Family Receives Home from G.O.B.

An elderly couple from the Lake Independence constituency was the recipient of a one-bedroom, concrete bungalow courtesy of the Government of Belize. Area Representative Cordel Hyde says he promised Marco Chan and his family that he would provide them with a house as soon as the Peoples United Party returned to office. That promise was made in 2008, and finally, after almost fifteen years, Hyde has delivered.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Fern Lane this morning.

“I am glad to see you all here and I really appreciate it. To all my friends and family here with me, to see that I am receiving something that I really wanted to haveAnd I really appreciate this and what they have done for me and I really love it and I don’t know when I could ever stop loving this. I will never stop with Mr. Cordel who is the best man around here.”

“I made this promise from 2008 not expecting we would be out that long. I end up actually leaving and coming back, but I came back to politics primarily for people like Ms. Anna so that I could fulfill the promise I made to those people, because I grew up in this area. I grew up just like them. I lived just like them. So, I could relate entirely to their challenges they have. Our jobs as government  ministers is to try as best as we can to deliver to as many people as we can, primarily the people that needs it the most. They just want a little lift. This house will take them forward for generations, previous to that Mr. Mario didn’t know if he would make it to day. He has been battling a lot of illnesses. I am happy that he is here. I am happy they have a start. It is a one bedroom, but it has an opportunity to grow into multiple bedrooms, I think four bedrooms. It’s a big deal; a new house is a big deal.”

“This is just one of hundreds that we are working on. As you can see, just to be able to access the property we had to build the road and we had to kinda fill the lot. So, sometimes it ends up being more than just building the house. But, that is what we are here for. These people are in need. They have no other means. We had a mandate when we formed this government and we are fulfilling that as best as we can. So, it is a pleasure for us to assist them.”
