Energy Security: A Regional Concern in Latin America and the Caribbean

Eamon Courtenay

Energy security remains a primary concern for many countries in the region, particularly in light of the war in Ukraine.  These countries are exploring the possibility of doing business with Venezuela, an oil-rich nation that is willing to partner in addressing this issue.  The United States, however, has brought down heavy sanctions on Venezuela, notwithstanding the support that it has gotten from other countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.  The recent Summit of the Americas served to highlight that support.

Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“I think that has helped us because the Americans realize the importance of Venezuela to the region.  The importance of the region to the United States is fifteen votes in the O.A.S., half, and we have an issue with energy and there is a country that we are seeking to do business with that seems to be moving closer and closer to be able to do it.  The United States realizes that, listen we need to sit down and have a discussion about this, if not, China will, if not, Russia will.  And so, as you look at the geopolitical horizon, you have to understand that each one of these moves has a countermove.  Some are not seen, many are not seen.  There are many discussions taking place, hopefully that will result in direct benefit to the Belizean people and to the region as a whole.”
