UDP Calls for Collet Montejo’s Resignation from Senate

The Opposition is calling for the resignation of P.U.P. Senator Collet Montejo from the upper house. Citing sections sixty-three and sixty-four of the Constitution of Belize, U.D.P. Chairman Michael Peyrefitte says Montejo is disqualified from remaining in the Senate, because of his appointment as field coordinator for the re-districting exercise.

“This PUP Senator, you see the Constitution of Belize threads a fine needle like this, in certain instances you are not qualified to be a Senator if your situation makes you not qualified to be a member of the House. If you look at 63 (1), f (1) of the Constitution of Belize it says, no persons shall be qualified to be appointed as a Senator who is disqualified for membership of the House of Representatives by any law, by reason of his holding or acting in any office, the functions of which involves any responsibility for or in connection with the conduct of any election, or two, any responsibility for the compilation of revision of any electoral register. This man has taken on a job to do that exact same thing. He needs to resign from the Senate if he wants to do to that job.  And just in case, because they wah say I don’t know lee law right. Go to section 64 2 (d), every senator, because they wah she ih nuh qualified fih be wah senator but ih dah done a senator. Every senator, well this dah weh 64 she, every senator shall vacate his seat in the Senate subject to the provision of section three of the section if any circumstances arise that if he were not a senator would cause him to be disqualified for appointment as such by virtue of the same 63 1 I just read.”
