Belmopan Highway Expansion Lands Sold, says Area Rep

The transfer of a portion of the Isidoro Beaton Stadium’s compound to a private entity in Belmopan is not the only land issue Mira says his team has identified. According to the Belmopan Area Representative, the former city council allowed private developments to take place along Constitution Drive, on green spaces designated for the expansion of the highway leading into the city. Now, these developers are seeking title for those lands. According to Mira, some of them are coming with receipt of payments in hand.

“We have not been able to put a value on things as yet, because as the days go by more persons are coming by either with receipts or word of mouth saying but I paid the previous Mayor so much money and they assured me they would give us title for lands, which they have not. I think if you ride here on Constitution Drive in Belmopan you will notice that one side there was a buffer and some businesses fenced that buffer. That is also a big issue, because they have come to us and said, listen I have paid for this. I need title to this land. But the LIC in lands is saying you cannot get title because this is part of an expanded road coming into Belmopan. You will never get title. Now, it leaves to try and solve these issues. Some of them have receipts; some of them don’t have receipts. It is an ongoing issue that we inherited and it is difficult to find a solution. Some are saying well, we go to court and I think that is the best way to do it, because there is no other way. That goes all the way up to I think Million Dollar Lounge. That parking lot as well. There is a whole big buffer in front which is the future is for the expansion of the entrance coming into Belmopan.”
