No Recent Encounters with GAF in the Sarstoon

In the House on Friday, Prime Minister John Briceño made an appeal to the Government of Guatemala for its adherence to the confidence building measures established with Belize back in 2005. He highlighted persistent challenges with illegal border crossing, and cattle ranching along the western border. But what about the southernmost part of the country, the Sarstoon River, where in the past there have been several reported hostilities with the G.A.F.? Today, the Minister of National Security says that for some time now, there has been no incident.

“We do have our regular channel of communications – General Loria with the Guatemalans, ourselves and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I have not recalled any incidents because I do know that on a couple times our ministry had been written for requests for people to go in. We’ve granted it and reports came without any incident and we hope it stays that way.”
