Belize Loses Its Second Game in the CONCACAF Nations League

Belize lost its second game in the CONCACAF Nations League on Sunday at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City. The loss comes on the heels of another against Dominican Republic last Thursday, in which Belize lost two-nil. Both teams went into the match having lost their previous game, so they were in similar standing. In the first half of the game, there was an auto goal when Belize’s defender Deshawon Nembhard hit the ball over goalkeeper Charles Tillett.  It was a slip that team Belize did not recover from. Today, News Five spoke to Team Manager Ian Jones about the team’s performance.

“I can honestly say that we lost our game. I can’t say that Guatemala beat us. We gave up an auto goal and a penalty. Our goal keeper was exceptional in the post, our defense line was exceptional and we also missed three or four great opportunities where under normal circumstances our strikers would have sealed the deal for those. But it wasn’t an easy game and Guatemala was not the best of host to us. The Guatemalan coach spoke to us afterwards and said that Belize has a very good team, it is just unfortunate for us and fortunate for him because if he had lost the game it would have been his job.”

“It wasn’t an easy game. I had to give my all to help the team. The result wasn’t positive, but we still have opportunity to qualify for Gold Cup.”

Duane Moody

“Let’s talk about that auto goal yesterday. What happened?

Charles Tillett

“Well I guess it was just miscommunication with me and my defenders. And I guess it was too early ina di game too, ina di ninth minute. But after that we hold up until the seventy-eighth minute when we gave up a penal(ty), but we were defending good.”

Evral Trapp

Evral Trapp, Captain, Belize Senior Men’s Team

“Yes we lost in Belize and now we lose in Guatemala two-nil, but as the captain leading the ship, we just have to get the group together and stay focus because we have two more games coming up at home and in French Guiana. We got a lot of young players, but I just have to keep on motivating those guys on and off the field.”
